About Barefoot Ocean
Barefoot Ocean Connects People with Science and Data to Support the Health of Our Oceans
Our Mission
At Barefoot Ocean, our mission is to empower individuals, small-scale fishing communities, and local governmental and non-governmental organizations with the formidable power of science and data. Our goal is to streamline the data collection processes, mechanize standard data analyses, advance data transparency, and centralize access to various data types necessary to oversee local fisheries, safeguard critical coastal ecosystems, and exhibit management outcomes.
We work to eliminate the complexities and hindrances associated with conventional data challenges, such as data acquisition, data storage, data analysis, and data interpretation, and, most notably, we communicate that knowledge to a range of users within the applicable time frames. To achieve this, we are creating user-friendly platforms that consolidate data streams into a comprehensive and intuitive interface.
Meet Our Talented Team
Courtney Cox is the founder of Barefoot Ocean. She is the visionary leader behind the organization's mission and strategy. She provides direction and oversight to the entire team, ensuring that everyone is working towards the same goals. Courtney has a deep understanding of the challenges facing community-based fisheries and is committed to using science and technology to drive positive change.
Ankit Vohra is responsible for designing and implementing the technology infrastructure that powers Barefoot Ocean's data-driven approach. He has expertise in data analytics, machine learning, and software development and works closely with the fisheries science team to ensure that the data they collect is accurate and useful.
Brittany specializes in marine spatial planning and geospatial analysis as it applies to marine reserve design, connectivity and fisheries management. She develops high-quality data visualizations that summarize geospatial data, supporting the development of interactive marine spatial planning and data collections tools, and conducts ecological and social data analyses to understand data trends and impacts of management actions. Brittany is passionate about fisheries management and marine conservation and is dedicated to making complex science more accessible for resource managers .
Laura is an interdisciplinary, quantitative scientist, specializing in marine ecology, and trained in science communication, data analysis and visualization, and collaborative research workflows. She is the lead data analyst at Barefoot Ocean facilitating data driven decision making with her expertise in trend analyses, mixed effects modeling, and coding interactive data tools using R markdown and R Shiny. Laura is motivated to make science more open and reproducible, and contribute to our society’s knowledge of coastal and marine ecology by being a link between scientific inquiry and on-the-ground management initiatives.
Katie has expertise in marine community ecology, scientific diving, invertebrate recruitment, data analysis in R, environmental monitoring, marine taxonomy, bilingual science communication and educational outreach. She has worked across diverse ecosystems (i.e., rocky intertidal, wetlands, estuaries, tropical reefs, and kelp forests) and has a deep appreciation for how interconnected we all are and the importance of management and conservation of marine environments. She is responsible for collating, analyzing, and interpreting the data that Barefoot Ocean uses to support local fishing communities and protect critical coastal ecosystems.
